The Rapid spread of the COVID-19 and the illness it causes has sparked an alarm worldwide. The World health Organization has declared a global health emergency and many countries are struggling to contain the infection. There is lot of misinformation out there and I thought it would be a good idea to obtain information from reliable sources and compile a list of common questions:
Q. Can pneumonia vaccine and flu vaccine protect you against the new Coronavirus?
Ans: Pneumonia and Flu vaccines do not protect against Coronavirus.
Q. Are younger people susceptible to COVID -19 or does this affect only older population?
Ans: People of ALL ages are affected by Novel Coronavirus. Older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus. WHO advises people in all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus.
Q. Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?
Ans: COVID- 19 or Novel Coronavirus is a virus and antibiotics do not help in preventing or treating the new coronavirus.
Q. Can Garlic help prevent infection with Novel coronavirus /COVID -19
Ans: Garlic is a healthy food and has some antibacterial properties but there is no evidence from current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from infection with COVID-19.
Q. Can spraying Alcohol or Chlorine all over your body kill the new coronavirus?
Ans: Spraying Alcohol or Chlorine does not kill the virus that has already entered your body. Spraying substances like these could be harmful to clothes or mucous membrane ( eg : eyes , mouth ).
Q. Is accepting packages from China safe?
Ans: There is currently no reason to suspect that packages from China harbor COVID-19 , there is still a lot that we don’t know about this novel viruses but in general, because of poor survivability on surfaces of these coronviruses, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures.
Q. Are hand dryers effective in killing the new coronavirus?
Ans: Hand dryers are not effective in killing the COVID-19. To protect yourself against the coronavirus you should frequently clean your hands with alcohol based hand rub or soap and water for 20 seconds ( Sing Happy birthday song twice ) you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.
Q. Does Ultraviolet disinfecting lamp kill the novel coronavirus?
Ans: UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of the skin as UV radiation causes skin irritation.
Q. Can you get infected with coronavirus by eating food prepared by others?
Ans: We are still learning about the transmission of COVID -19 . It's not clear at this point if transmission can happen through this route. That Said COVID -19 has been detected in the stool of certain patients so we currently cannot rule out the possibility of occasional transmission from infected food handlers.
